Superfly, the debut feature of Director X (née Julien Lutz), functions similarly. It borrows plenty from Gordon Parks Jr.’s 1972 blaxploitation classic Super Fly, from the names and archetypes of its core characters to its tale of a coke dealer, Priest (Trevor Jackson), whose plan to ditch the business after one final score is muddied by friends, foes, and some dirty-ass cops. But where the original presented a gritty, often bleak portrait of societal and institutional racism, X ushers it into a realm of pure, gilded fantasy.
Superfly is an upcoming American action film directed by Director X and written by Alex Tse.[2] A remake of the 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly, it stars Trevor Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Michael Kenneth Williams, Lex Scott Davis, and Jennifer Morrison, and follows a career criminal who tries to get out of the Atlanta drug scene, only to have one bad deal put him in harm's way. Rapper Future produces alongside Joel Silver, as well as writing the film's original songs. Superfly is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 13, 2018.

Superfly is, by and large, an action thriller in the mold of the Fast and Furious franchise, setting ridiculous, fist-pumping action sequences against the decadent spectacle of a rap video. Hip-hop has a long history of flaunting an absurd, orgiastic vision of success, and X, the eye behind some of Drake and Rihanna’s best videos, uses it here to cultivate an alternate reality where excess is simply a given. Hilariously, it’s not a party in the world of Superfly unless cash is literally raining from the skies. The glitz, the drinks, the fashion, the action — each is in step with the next. The excess extends to the sex as well; Priest lives in a comfortable polyamorous relationship with Georgia (Lex Scott Davis) and Cynthia (Andrea Londo), and although their inevitable threesome is as softcore as they come, you can’t say that it doesn’t suit the milieu.
Beyond enlivening the downbeat scenes with lurid colors nicked from the Hotline Bling clip, he capitalizes on his acumen with details that make the film feel lived-in and personal. This numbers among a small cadre of films shot during Georgia’s tax break-fueled production boom that embrace the character of Atlanta instead of disguising it as another city. A host of local talent fills out the soundtrack, trap-rap legends make inspired cameos, and X conjures all of the weatherbeaten beauty that ATL has to offer. The jargon-heavy dialogue may leave less-hip viewers lost, but it’s still the most naturalistic, plausible element in a film railing fat lines of powdered implausibility.
The new “Superfly” transplants the tale to the swank environs of contemporary upscale Atlanta, and it gives its hero the 21st-century equivalent of O’Neal’s processed-pimp look. As Priest, a coke dealer who has built a business while taking great care to remain under the police radar, Trevor Jackson, from “Eureka” and “American Crime,” sports a jutting abundance of luxurious inky silken flat hair, marked by an elegant slice of a part, plus a highly manicured beard, a pirate earring, and a pretty-boy scowl. If George Michael and Mr. T had a baby and dressed him in the sleekest of designer leather, he might look like this guy. Jackson is only 21 (O’Neal, when he played Priest, was 34), but he beats the holy crap out of people, fires pistols with gangsta heartlessness, and at one point even dodges a bullet, never losing his cool. Jackson does cool almost too well. He isn’t a bad actor, but it’s not like he finds many gradations within a young hustler’s survivalist pout.
