Life of the Party becomes a gushy lovefest. That’s the magic she’ll have to work on the bland Life of the Party, in which she plays Deanna, who returns to school alongside her college senior daughter. The film is a cream puff about a mother-daughter relationship, masquerading as a raucous return-to-campus comedy, most of it predictable.
Life of the Party is a 2018 American comedy film directed by Ben Falcone and written by Falcone and Melissa McCarthy, the third film Falcone has directed that the pair co-wrote following Tammy (2014) and The Boss (2016). The film, starring McCarthy, Molly Gordon, Gillian Jacobs, Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen, Matt Walsh, Debby Ryan, Adria Arjona, Jessie Ennis, Stephen Root, and Jacki Weaver, follows a newly divorced mother who returns to college to complete her degree, but she ends up bonding with her daughter's friends.
Life of the Party has perfunctory comedic twists: Yawn. The movie is only occasionally funny. Usually the gentle treatment McCarthy gives her character is at odds with the general sense of the action. The movie features essentially three kinds of scenes. One kind is the loud, drunken campus party held at one or the other of the Greek houses. One is the study scene, invariably interrupted by a character who wants to do something more active.

More fun than funny, Life of the Party may be one of the weaker comedies to come from Melissa McCarthy in a leading role, but it's entertaining, pleasant and harmless enough if you've been taken by McCarthy's previous work with Ben Falcone.
